NYC paid $135M for 246 medical mistakes

New York City paid out $135 million in the past fiscal year for medical mistakes at its public hospitals. That's an increase of about 5 percent from 2010, according to a report in The New York Daily News. The payments covered 246 medical blunders, many of which were catastrophic for the patients. In one case, a Brooklyn man suffered a debilitating stroke while waiting hours to see a doctor at Kings County Hospital. In another, a 10-year-old girl was pumped with a fatal dose of oxygen after an asthma attack. And in a third incident of medical error, a Bronx woman went to Lincoln Hospital for treatment of a cheek infection and wound up paralyzed. She received the largest of the payouts -- $8 million.
