Settlement approved for town's asbestos victims

Residents of Libby, Montana have finally won a victory in their lengthy fight for retribution for asbestos injuries. For decades, more than 1,300 of the town's 3,000 residents have suffered illness because of asbestos pollution from a former W.R. Grace & Co. mine. Many have come down with a deadly lung disease, making what The Los Angeles Times called the "deadliest Superfund site" in the country's history. But recently a judge approved a $43 million settlement in the case of hundreds of residents against the state of Montana, which lawsuits claimed failed in its duty to warn and protect Libby residents from dangers posed by asbestos dust. There are still plenty of other cases pending. Despite the settlement, however, few folks in Libby were celebrating. The town still paints a grim picture, with residents reportedly often seen pushing oxygen carts through local stores and some 400 families mourning the loss of a loved one due to asbestos-related disease.
