Back operation goes awry, surgeon settles

Eileen Kelleher had elective back surgery in 2005. But problems arose after the procedure in the intensive care unit, where she suffered intra-abdominal hemorrhaging, abdominal wounds and other severe complications. She charged in a medical malpractice lawsuit that the problems were not adequately diagnosed or treated by the medical staff or the surgeon who performed the operation. The result was a gangrenous lower leg condition that required an above-the-knee amputation. Kelleher recently agreed to settle her case against New Milford Hospital in Connecticut and the surgeon, Dr. Ramon Mabasa. The settlement for Kelleher, now 63, was for $5.25 million, according to a news report of the case. The same article reported that Mabasa in 2004 was disciplined by the state health department in relation to an accusation he scheduled the repair of a hernia in a woman who had just undergone a Caesarean section but mistakenly performed a minor surgical operation on the wrong side. Mbasa is now reportedly retired. Click here for more on medical malpractice lawsuits.
